Sir,

Why are most of the students afraid of Mathematics?

Being afraid of something totally depends on the person concerned.Though maths is an important subject and different from others, i think most of the fear is due to anxiety. One may remain anxious about mathematics and develop this mental block that mathematics is difficult or take it as just another subject and spend time on it according to his/her workload. To some extent this anxiety also results from emphasis given on doing well in maths by parents/peers. As i have said in earlier posts, the more you practice, the better you get at it. Maths is different from other subjects, one cannot just memorize formulas, mug up proofs and hope to do well without actually practicing them.

Why do we need to study Maths???? Hope we never had such a baaaaad and borrrring subject…. soooo long sums…

Hi Urmila,

Finding a subject boring is upto you. Its completely your personal preference. But I would like to add that some knowledge of each field is essential, thats why you have common subjects upto certain level after which you get to make your decision as to which subject you want to take up.

And really maths isnt bad, and for that matter no subject is. And actually maths is not about solving long sums, its more about conceptual understanding. You will find it boring if you keep on doing same type of questions again. Try and select a set of different problems, and try and find shorter ways of solving a problem, that way hopefully you will not find it boring. Good luck :-)

thank you for your tips. i am sure i'll follow them

sir,

I am a student of manava bharati school. I am instred in maths but the steps which are there if solve problems then Iam totally confused than the steps that I am doing are wright or wrong. I want to know that how you solve your problams in maths. what steps should we kept in mind while doing maths?

Abhishek verma

Hi Abhishek,

Sorry for delayed reply. There are no fixed rules to do a problem. It depends on the problem though, sometimes you just need to follow a step by step procedure, at others you need to think a bit, do some manipulations and convert the problem into a problem that you know how to solve. Like for example in word problems, you might need to convert them into equations and solve them. You can also extract all the relevant information given and try and use an appropriate formula. Difficult problems are generally a combination of two or more problems. Identifying the subproblems and solving them individually would result in complete solution.

Maths is about learning basic things in depth. If you are thorough with your basics you can tackle most of the problems without facing any confusion about the steps to be followed.

nitin sir,

i am not very weak in maths, infact, i help my friends in their maths problems. i am good in maths in my class but when it comes to my exam i get totally blank.

Hi Anusha,

Since you don’t have any problem with the course and you know it well, your getting blank in your exams can be attributed to nervousness while giving examination. To get rid of this problem you will have to change the way you prepare and attempt the paper. During preparation in addition to studying all the topics well, you can also solve previous years’ question papers in a closed room without any disturbances and within the examination duration.

And when you are attempting the paper read all questions once and solve those first in which you have full confidence followed by the ones that may require more efforts from your side. Attempting the question paper systematically and coolly will eventually remove this problem.

Sir,

Maths Being a very good subject students dont like to study maths . Please can u give me any ideas to develop my friends mind that maths is a good subject and it will help me and my friends improving in maths

Arindam,

Your question has really kept me wondering. I tried answering it many times but couldn't. Let me try. Though its very difficult to make anyone like any particular subject, one factor that can make someone like a subject is the way it is taught. It sometimes happen that whenever a particular teacher starts teaching, your concentration and enthusiasm for the subject automatically builds. Having said that you need to give time for your interests to grow.

You can persuade your friends and have group study sessions, at the end of which you can party for a bit, which would be an incentive to study together. Give it a bit of your time daily. Maths is one subject, which you need to study regularly to keep up.

maths is exceptionely good but some topics afraid me like cube roots so can you give me some tips of improving it

Vipul Sharma

The methodology should be to concentrate more on the topics that scare you. Taking cube root of a number is fixed set of steps and thus by practicing more, you can get rid of this problem.

Sir,

I know Maths is a good subject but I get confused while solving different type of sums as I get Confused which method to be used

During solving the sums.

Thanks

In mathematics, there are many types of problems and many methods to solve a particular problem. You should always approach a problem with the method which appears more intuitive to you.

When you are starting to solve a problem, read it once carefully. If you have solved a similar problem before, apply same method which you had used at that time. If however, you have not solved similar problem before, then try solving it conceptually, using basic formulas step by step. By this I mean, find out the main objective of the question, what is it that you need to find. Then see, if all the parameters needed to find the value of the final parameter are present. If not, then first find the values of those parameters, using the values given in the question.

The thumb rule is, while preparing, solve a lot of problems of each type of category and first attempt each category on your own. Also if your solution is different from that given in book, analyze both the solutions. It may be that your solution is better than that given in the book. Even if it is not you will develop your understanding of the subject and feel more comfortable tackling newer problems

Sir,

Even though I remember the formulas , but whenever I need to apply it in the sums it justs knocks out of my brain . what should I do so that I remember them at times of need .

The main cause of this, most of the times is lack of practice. Practice questions of all types. Also solving last year question papers is a good strategy,

But still, if this persists, this can be due to pressure. To overcome this problem, when you start solving, read the question calmly and think about the method you will be using before actually attempting it. Solving a lot of questions will eventually make you more confident and you will overcome this problem.

Hello Sir,

Mathematics is not just an application of formulas to solve problems. Remembering these is just the first step towards solution.

Now, what you need to do is practice enough problems using each of these formulas.

Solve the exercises at the back of your textbook and some reference book. You need to time your practice sessions and solve each question fully while practicing, do not skip even the simplest of steps while practicing if you want to improve your speed. What happens is that during exam you not only solve the problem but also try to present it well and you end up taking more time. Thus practice questions as if you were writting them in an examination.

You can also solve previous years’ question papers in a closed room without any disturbances and within the examination duration. While attempting the paper read all questions once and solve those first in which you have full confidence followed by the ones that may require more efforts from your side. Be calm and composed while giving examination. In due course of time you will surely overcome this problem.
